Vigna Rionda: all said. A name that is legendary, the Olympus of Barolo.
The Marchisio Family enters, through the main door, the golden club of the Princes of the Langhe. Vigna Rionda is one of the most renowned crus of Barolo. He is up there, in the high heavens, next to "colleagues" like Cannubi and Brunate. "We are excited", the Marchisio family admits: "... the first Barolo in our history... And what a Barolo: a 2016 Riserva, from the most coveted vineyards of Serralunga d'Alba." It was a kind of secret, but now it's time to reveal it. "Being part of the group of Vigna Rionda producers, about ten in all, marks a milestone in the life of our company."
Vigna Rionda is one of the most famous MGAs (additional geographical mentions) in the world. For lovers of high-class Barolo, a true Mecca. This is due to the exceptional exposure, the marly soils: power and aromas, infinite longevity. Guides and specialized magazines are full of compliments: the super-Barolo Vigna Rionda is unmistakable for its finesse and depth. Intense on the nose, ethereal and persistent. An explosion of fragrances: spicy notes and undergrowth, licorice, red fruits. Withered flowers, leather, balsamic herbs. Majestic elegance and great structure. A truly noble wine, deep and very long. The key to his fame? The perfect soil, the ideal microclimate for Nebbiolo.
"This project of ours," explain Sergio and Fabio Marchisio, "was born from the collaboration with a winemaker friend from Serralunga. It has helped us to enter – in the most prestigious way – into the magical world of Barolo." Of course, Marchisio's Vigna Rionda will also have the unmistakable imprint of the house. A pioneer in the green, organic and biodynamic sector. The Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 2016: fermented and aged for two years in large oak barrels, and then finished for another 12 months in third-passage barriques, before long aging in the bottle.
The name Vigna Rionda is linked to the history of Barolo itself. It is already mentioned in medieval times: the land belonged to the Marquisate of Saluzzo. They passed to the Falletti family, who held them until 1860. Then, in the twentieth century, the acquisition by local producers: very few, still today. The history of the Marchisio Family, daughter of Roero, could not fail to be completed with the nectar of the Langhe. Sergio Marchisio was the first producer in the world to vinify Nebbiolo in ceramic amphorae. And now he is also the first winemaker in Roero to put his signature on the paradise of Barolo: Vigna Rionda.
